Why Join Our UN SDG Project?
Achieving the 2030 Agenda is a task too big for governments and NGOs alone. We need the private sector to join in creating a future for our children and their children’s children.
When I read the book Factfulness by Hans Rosling during onboarding, I was amazed to realize my own misconceptions. Going through the Gapminder.org test gave me factful data with those wonderful little interactive bubbles winking at me when I was proven wrong! This gave me a ray of hope that the world is not as bad as I thought, and together, we can make it more wonderful. A WORLD WE ALL WANT!
I’ve also been highly attuned to the health risks of COVID-19, as a microbiologist. The pandemic has expanded my interest in the environment and amplified my desire to contribute to SDGs focused on societal issues. Each of these has challenging underlining targets with tremendous impact potential for businesses and society.
I am happy to be a part of this enriching project. If you would like to be in the room with intellectual, curious people, put on your thinking hat…and join the project!
Biography
Amaraja Kulkarni had deep roots in nature since her childhood in a suburban town in India. An article regarding soil bio-fertilizers sparked her curiosity about microbial interactions. She earned her Bachelor’s degree with Distinction in Industrial Microbiology, learning the beneficial aspects of microbial systems. She was one of the few women to complete a master’s degree in microbiology with a focus on Environmental and Experimental Microbiology and stood Second in the University. Her initial career involved Wet Lab jobs, applying theoretical knowledge to practical outcomes. This includes enzyme fermentation at a large scale, rDNA techniques, and DNA sequencing.
Currently, she works with SPRIM LLC, a boutique consultancy firm, and ObvioHealth, a digital health organization providing real-world digital clinical trials that helps businesses with all the secondary data research and backend work. While doing this, she has gained robust knowledge about the life science sector and markets.
Amaraja’s interest in nature has been further focused on sustainability issues since the beginning of her post-graduate work. She has followed progress on the UN SDGs since they were ratified in 2015. She has completed e-Learning courses including Resource Efficiency, Integration of SDGs into National Planning offered by UN-ESCAP, and Youth and SDGs offered by UNITAR; and Amaraja is continually updating her knowledge. She is currently a candidate with the SHERPA Institute Advanced Placement CISR Certified Expert – Innovation Specialist Hybrid program.
In the UN SDG Corporate Guidebook Series, Amaraja is a Meta-Researcher and is a team member with SDGs 6, 9, 12, 13, and 17. She is also an information designer contributing info-graphics for all the SDG Teams. Her personal scientific reading allows her to share research with teams across the project.
Amaraja publishes a blog www.cravido.in where she highlights issues with sustainability in mind. Kulkarni also volunteers with Policy Advocacy Research Centre (PARC), India. She has authored a comprehensive report on solid waste management in India, titled “WARSA” (meaning inheritance in some Indian languages) an acronym of “Waste As Resource by changing Stakeholder’s Approach”. She is breaking this massive report into digestible chunks in a series of articles that you are invited to read. Amaraja promises to translate technical language into laymen’s terms and invites you to share your experiences with stakeholders related to sustainable consumption and production (SCP).
